Young Black & Deadly (YBD) is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music talent development program run by Gadigal Information Service (Koori Radio) in Sydney. After a round of talent quests, a select group of young artists participated in a series of development and recording workshops. At the culmination of the program, participants wrote and recorded a song with the assistance of program mentors. Songs from the 2015/16 program are collected on the 2016 Young Black & Deadly Rising Stars EP.

We hope you enjoy these great songs from some very deadly emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander musicians!

Bon Voyage Munk!

Six months ago we welcomed one of our Koori Radio family back to the airwaves when Munkimuk (Mark Ross) took over as Brekky Show host. Munk has been associated with Koori Radio for many years, presenting shows, producing and working with our recording artists, and also serving as a board member.

This month we bid a reluctant farewell to Munk as he sets sails for Asia where he's spending the next few months recording and producing.

"It's been an absolute pleasure to host the Brekky Show every morning," said Munk. "I've had a great time sharing knowledge and some great music, thanks for the support and for tuning in."

The Koori Radio team thanks Munk for his work on air over the past six months and wishes him well on his travels, we're gonna miss those random animal facts!

Broadcaster Profile - Aunty Sue Tate and Jamie Murray from The Deadly Gap program

Aunty Sue Tate and Jamie Murray crossed paths often in their hometown of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Both being community minded people with a passion for Aboriginal issues and working with Aboriginal youth (Jamie is a youth worker and Aunty Sue has worked in health for over 38 years), the two friends decided to channel their community work and experience into a radio program – The Deadly Gap.

After a brief stint on Radio Blue Mountains, in early 2016 Aunty Sue and Jamie brought The Deadly Gap to Koori Radio where they’ve been broadcasting ever since, keeping the community up to date on what’s happening in health, education and politics, discussing all the big issues, and speaking with Aboriginal people from across the country about the issues that matter to them. There’s plenty of lively discussion, jokes, and good music too.

Puha and Pork Bones Fundraiser

On the 14th of July, Kimberly and Jase from the Puha and Pork Bones program organised a special fundraiser event for Koori Radio held at the Hustle and Flow Bar in Redfern.

The night featured a live broadcast of the program with special guest presenters, live music performances, food, and raffles. The event was a big success, raising money that will go towards buying new studio equipment for our all of our community broadcasters to utilise.

Big thanks to those who attended and to all of the businesses that supported the event, as well as the performers. And of course, big ups to Kimberly and Jase for putting on such a great night!

Supporting our young talent

The Young Black & Deadly Talent Development Program needs your support to continue unearthing and training our next generation of music artists and music industry professionals.

YBD has previously helped to launch and nurture the careers of artists such as Casey Donovan, Shanell Dargan, and Aimee Hannan.

If you would like to support Young Black & Deadly, you can visit our Go Fund Me campaign page and make a donation. We are hoping to raise $15 000 to ensure the future delivery of the program.

Money raised will go towards the running of YBD workshops, buying new instruments, and the continued mentoring and development of our talented young stars.
