Aboriginal Housing Company submits DA to Department of Planning for Precinct 3, Pemulwuy Project, Redfern

Sydney, 3rd July 2017 – The Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) submitted the Development Application (DA) for Precinct 3, the Col James Student Accommodation of the Pemulwuy Project, to the Department of Planning on the 14th June 2017.
 
Precinct 3, of the Pemulwuy Project will deliver student accommodation with 522 rooms. Located within proximity to universities, TAFE and public transport, the Pemulwuy Project will significantly improve the amenities of the area, the public domain and support continued growth of the local and international education sector.
 
The AHC recently launched its “Leading The Way” fund that will provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through employment, training, further education, and scholarships.
 
The community will be able to access significantly increased social and economic benefits as a result of the project. The AHC plan to implement long-term employment contracts and apprenticeships during and after the construction of the Pemulwuy Project.
 
The Chairperson of the AHC Board Alisi Tutuila, says, “It is a landmark day for the AHC and we are extremely proud to submit the Pemulwuy Project’s DA to the Department of Planning. We are one step closer to realising the dream of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in returning to the Block as one community”.
 
Ms Tutuila added, “We are truly thankful to all parties who have provided their input and have been involved in finalising the submission. On behalf of the AHC Board, I want to also highlight that the Pemulwuy Project is more than just bricks and mortar, it’s about being innovative in delivering affordable housing for our people without a financial burden on the next generation”.

About the Aboriginal Housing Company
The Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) is an independent non-profit charity and the first community housing provider in Australia, incorporated in 1973 as a company limited by guarantee.  It is an all Aboriginal governed organisation, located in the heart of Redfern, which lies in the traditional lands of the Gadigal People, part of the Eora Nation.
