Why this petition matters

Started by Prisoners' Aid Association of NSW

The inmate support services provided by the Association are vital to inmates. Inmates recently incarcerated often have no links in the community that can assist with the transfer of funds from their bank account to their inmate account or the collection and safe storage of their personal belongings whilst they are incarcerated. The services benefit the general community by assisting released people in their transition to community living and in doing so reduce the risk of re offending. The property stored and returned on release consists of items that assist practically, such as, identification documents, tools of trade and clothing, as well as items of intrinsic value such as family photographs. At the point of service delivery the vast majority of those utilising these services are being held on remand and have not been found guilty of any offence.
