A confronting memorial for Indigenous diggers, consisting of 7 metre tall bullets, is being unveiled in Sydney’s Hyde Park. The artist behind the work says the work is inspired by his grandfather and all Indigenous servicemen. We tell the story of Eddie Albert- who left his small town of Deeral in FNQ to serve in the middle-east in WW2. Whilst serving Eddie was shot once, captured and spent several years in and out of POW camps in Italy. He returned to Australia at the end of the war only to be denied farmland and the respect given to other servicemen. His story is now immortalised in writing by his daughter, Trish Albert, and in images & artwork by his grandson, artist Tony Albert. Tony and Trish tell this remarkable story of their grandfather/father and how it inspires their work.
