Babana bus

Early last Sunday morning, a 14-year-old driving a stolen car mounted the kerb and careered through pedestrians in Sydney's Kings Cross. Police shot the driver and the front-seat passenger. Both are recovering.

Earlier in the week, Deputy NSW Opposition Leader Linda Burney (herself an Aboriginal woman) said dysfunction and family breakdown in urban Indigenous communities is just as damaging as in the rural communities we hear so much about.

We also heard from small Aboriginal organisations like Babana Mens group, which helps mentor Aboriginal men and encourage them to try and live a life free of violence, drink, drugs and dysfunction. It operates on a shoestring budget. But one anonymous RN Breakfast listener was obviously moved by the work Babana does, and in an extraordinary act of generosity donated a new bus and the funding needed to operate it on an ongoing basis.
